Buy, Watch or Pass 12/25/06

We’ve entered the Championship round for most Fantasy Football leagues. If you are still alive to take the crown, then congratulations! We’ll review any standouts from Week 16 that could be available in your league for your Championship game. Here are the names I found:

QB’s

Vince Young, Tennessee Titans – 183 pass yds, 61 rush yds, 3 Total TD’s (2 Pass TD, 1 Rush TD)

Another game, another standout performance by Vince Young. After a sub par game versus Jacksonville (as expected), Young rebounded against Buffalo and kept the Tennessee Titans playoff hopes alive. Young has certainly learned to blend his mix of speed & arm very nicely, which has translated into a nice fantasy QB after the “BYE” week. However, he goes against the New England Patriots in the finale & does not make a good start for your championship game. The Patriots defense is number one versus Fantasy QB’s this year & if there is someone to stop him, it’s Bill Belichick. New England will be playing for the number 3 seed & will most likely have his starters playing most of the game. Keep your eye on Vince Young in 2007 though, as he may become a top fantasy performer next year. WATCH for 2007

Jeff Garcia, Philadelphia Eagles – 238 pass yds, 43 rush yds, 1 TD, 1 INT

Talk about revitalizing a career! Jeff Garcia took over the reigns when Donovan McNabb went down and has been spectacular. Garcia is now boasting a 96.2 QB rating & has Philadelphia in the playoffs. His last game comes against Atlanta & with a division title at stake; the Eagles will be going full force with all their starters. Atlanta’s defense has been average against starting Fantasy QB’s so it could go either way. However, Garcia is hot right now & the whole team is playing well. If Garcia is available and you need a QB, he makes a good pickup to end the year. BUY

RB’s

Ron Dayne, Houston Texans – 153 rush yds, 2 TD’s

The Houston Texans pulled off a monster upset over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, but what shouldn’t be surprising is Ron Dayne’s success over their putrid run defense. This isn’t a one shot deal either, Dayne has posted his 3rd straight game with a touchdown & has averaged over 4 yards per carry the last four games. With Dayne solidifying the starting running back role in Houston, it is now safe to trust a Houston running back. There is a good chance he is still available & with a final game against Cleveland, Dayne makes a great pickup & start for your championship game. BUY

Ladell Betts, Washington Redskins – 129 rush yds, 35 rec yds, 2 TD’s

Ladell Betts had his fifth straight 100 yard game and finally reached the end zone again, adding 2 touchdowns in Washington’s defeat. Betts has been very effective since Portis went down with a season ending injury & to my surprise, is still available in a lot of leagues. According to ESPN.com, Betts is still available in 29% of the leagues, meaning he could still be available in yours. He has a bit of a tougher matchup versus the New York Giants this weekend, but should still be effective with the offensive line he has in front of him. This is your last time to grab him. BUY

Michael Pittman, Tampa Bay Buccaneers – 86 rush yds, 21 rec yds, 1 TD

With Cadillac Williams unable to go, Michael Pittman got the start and was effective, rushing for 86 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown. Obviously he’s not worth picking up if he isn’t starting, but there is a good chance he will start again this week with Williams health in doubt. The Buccaneers play Seattle to finish the season, and could very well rack up some points against a mediocre Seahawk run defense. Watch and see how this situation bears out because Pittman could be a nice sleeper play if he gets the start. WATCH

WR’s

Vincent Jackson, San Diego Chargers – 97 rec yds, 2 TD’s

Eric Parker was unable to go on Sunday & Vincent Jackson filled in admirably, hauling in 5 catches for 97 yards & 2 TD’s. With San Diego looking to wrap up home field throughout the playoffs, they will more than likely go full force on Sunday versus Arizona. If Parker is unable to go again, Jackson makes a good pickup if you need to fill out your WR slots. WATCH

Isaac Bruce, St. Louis Rams – 148 rec yds, 1 TD

When it seemed that Isaac Bruce had lost all his usefulness as a starting fantasy WR, he bounced back on Sunday with a big game. His final game is against the Minnesota Vikings and while this matchup seems intriguing, the fact of the matter is that Bruce is too inconsistent and is too risky to start. The once star wide receiver is most likely on his way to retirement. PASS

Mike Furrey, Detroit Lions – 107 rec yds, 1 TD

The up and down fantasy season of Mike Furrey was on the ups on Sunday as he registered 107 yards & a touchdown. Furrey has been a nice number 2 receiver for the Lions, but his inconsistent play makes him a questionable Fantasy WR. With a final matchup versus Dallas, it’s best to leave Furrey on the waiver wire. PASS

Mark Clayton, Baltimore Ravens – 108 rec yds, 1 TD

Another receiver who has shown flashes of brilliance along with the perils of mediocrity is Mark Clayton. Clayton had an impressive showing versus Pittsburgh & continues to show improvement from his rookie season, but will still give you those bad fantasy games along with the good. He’ll be going up against Buffalo to finish the season, whom have done well against fantasy wide outs. If he’s still available, go ahead and pass due to the inconsistency. PASS
